The coffee & bakery run

Three hands toasting with latte-art coffees over a cafe table — the coffee and bakery run at City Gate

There is a circuit regulars walk at City Gate without ever calling it that. It starts with the smell of butter and ends with an empty paper bag. Here is how to do the coffee and bakery run properly.

Where the queue forms first

Start in the basement, where Butter Bread builds everything around shio pan — the soft Japanese salted-butter roll — and the flavours rotate with the season, from Mentaiko to Strawberry Matcha to a Dubai Chocolate version that sells out before lunch. Come twice in a month and the shelf has already changed on you. That is the point: you go to see what is new.

When the craving is specifically for something laminated and still warm, Croissand Cafe is the flaky end of the run. The grab-and-go box is the move on a busy morning — a stuffed croissant built to be eaten now, not saved — and the counter changes what it fills them with often enough to be worth a second look.

The cup that wakes you up

Some mornings do not need a sit-down — they need the cup, fast. Toast Box is the kopitiam ritual the way Singapore has always done it: thick kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and a kopi strong enough to mean it. For the tap-and-go order on the way to Nicoll Highway MRT, Luckin Coffee has the line moving before you have finished tapping.

For the green-tea faithful

Forty9 Matcha Bar whisks its own corner of the run — rich, smooth matcha that regulars rate without looking at the menu, from the straight ceremonial pour to a blueberry version worth ordering twice. It is the stop for the people who came for the green tea, not the coffee, and stayed for it.

When you have the morning to spare

The linger spots take over. Up on Level Two, 190 Degrees Bakery keeps it classic — the oven runs through the day on tau sa piah and fresh bread, with proper coffee and a waffle set that has its own following.

La Teh is where the laptop comes out and the catch-up runs long. The Private Tables is the quieter room you book when the coffee is really an excuse to sit down with someone properly.

Brews Moments and J-Town Cafe round out the corner for the days you just want somewhere good to sit with a drink.

A dozen cafes, bakeries and coffee houses under one roof at 371 Beach Road, about a seven-minute walk from Nicoll Highway MRT. Pick a starting point. The run does the rest.
